Like other nearby communities with commercial ties to waterways, Dover once boasted a healthy ship-building industry. Situated along the confluence of Cocheco, Salmon Falls and Bellamy Rivers, the original locale of maritime occurred at Dover Point. This area borders a stretch of Great Bay, a central water highway and the second largest estuarine bay on the East Coast, just up river from the Port of Portsmouth and the Atlantic Ocean. Dover is something of an educational center as well. Dover's public school systems are attended by more than 3,000 students. It's parochial schools are also well attended. A two year junior college, McIntosh College, prepares students for jobs in industry and business. Dover Recreational Facilities: 12 public tennis courts, one private and public golf course, cross country ski trails, youth and adult sport leagues, 16 parks and 24 miles of recreational waterways. With so much to offer its residents, the states' oldest continuous settlement seems destined for an even brighter future.
