Deering, New Hampshire
Population: 1,875
Located in Hillsborough County
Since the 1970s, the few surviving natives, working professionals who commute to jobs or manage to earn a living working at home, many retirees and an undetermined number of folks who take seriously the state motto "Live Free or Die" and just want to be left alone, have combined to create the present Deering. Deering's population sits at around 1,900 people but that number is increasing annually as more people decide to escape urban living and instead want a slower pace of life. Locals will greet you by name as you amble down the street, and it isn't hard to find a friendly face in this part of the country! The thirty-six square mile town that was to become Deering was carved out of a large land grant the British king gave to Captain John Mason in 1621. In 1746 John Tufton Mason, great grandson of the original John Mason, sold his entire claim to twelve wealthy merchants from Portsmouth. This group of investors was known as the Masonian Proprietors. This area was largely farmland but with the migration to the cities many of the farms were abandoned or parceled out into smaller lots. Then in the 1960's many people came back to the rural areas like Deering. But they did not come back to farm, but to settle and then commute to their place of employment, to places like Concord and Manchester. Deering has also attracted retirees who want to find a peaceful environment for their later years. Deering's open land and deserted old farmhouses are very appealing, and many professionals with good incomes are coming in and renovating the pristine, but ramshackle old houses that had not felt paint for generations. Most homes here are already established and older, with great historic significance. This means that there some "bargains" to be found! Some of the homes still need work, and for those with an eye to the future and not scared to renovate, these homes can be restored. Of course, there is some new construction underway, and most of the new homes tend to be large, and set back from the roads, in order to maintain a rural atmosphere. Residents love Deering because its healthy environment and open spaces make is an attractive place to raise their children. There is definitely an enthusiastic dedication to nature and the town is a model of conservation and dedicated attention to the environment. To that end there are many trails, and many state parks right in this area. Not far from Deering is Pats Peak Ski Mountain for people to enjoy their winter skiing. There are plenty of small rivers, and lakes around that offer fishing and canoeing. Find homes for sale in Deering New Hampshire
