Located in Merrimack County
Canterbury Village Center is the epitome of what a New England Village should be. The town is rural and agricultural in nature, and attracts artisans and writers because of its peaceful settings near major urban areas. The population, approx. 1,600, is spread over a large land area that is sandwiched between I-93 and the Merrimack River on the west and Route 106 on the east. Canterbury Shaker Village, a National Historic Site on 700 acres, is a collection of many buildings restored and maintained as a tribute to these industrious and inventive people. The town still boasts a number of working farms and a ride through its winding roads passes stone walls, fields and hills. Housing is mixed from traditional New England Colonial and Cape styles, modest ranches and bungalows, to substantial newer homes. A part of the Shaker Regional School District, Canterbury has its own elementary school and recreation field in the village center, and sends middle and senior high students to a new high school completed in 1997 in the neighboring town of Belmont.
