Located in the Truckee Meadows of Northern Nevada at the junction of Interstate 80 and US 395. The City of Sparks covers over 22 square miles at an elevation of 4400 feet. In this high desert community, the sun shines approximately 80 percent of the year, days are sunny and nights are cool. Sparks' present population is 63,000. Sparks has built a solid foundation for future growth. The Sparks Growth Management Plan encourages balanced and orderly urban development, clarifies the community's direction, and allows for a sound public and private partnership in the construction and development of the city. Sparks knows that to build a financially sound and beautiful community, it must be open to creative design and innovative financing techniques. Sparks is committed to working with private developers, industry and business to build a strong, elegant and prosperous city. Sparks is a major center for west coast tourism, distribution, warehousing, and light manufacturing. More than 100 national companies have business facilities in Sparks including General Motors, Kmart Corporation, Ralston-Purina Co., Federal Express, Sportif USA, United Parcel Service, Boise Cascade Corporation and Sherman Williams to name a few. The city has had a master plan for growth management since 1980, which provides a balanced approach to residential, commercial, and industrial development. A full range of housing options are available including single family homes, apartments, condominiums and mobile homes, the average rent for a 2 bedroom apartment is $580.00; The average cost for a typical 2000 square foot single family dwelling is $150,000.00. Taxes in Nevada are among the lowest in the nation. As part of the Washoe County School District, Sparks has two high schools, three middle schools, and fourteen elementary schools. Truckee Meadows Community College and the University of Nevada, Reno are within an easy commute. Reno Tahoe International Airport in neighboring Reno is the 3rd fastest growing airport in the nation with ten airlines. Eight medical facilities serve the greater metropolitan area with services offered by almost 700 physicians and surgeons and 200 dentists. Nursing homes and licensed child care centers are adequately provided. Reno is within 30 minutes of Pyramid Lake. Pyramid Lake (which he named for a tufa rock formation on the eastern shore) remains as strikingly beautiful and as enchanting as it was before he came. The Sparks Redevelopment Agency promotes year-around activities and street events in the picturesque Victorian Square such as The Best-in-the West Rib Cook off, Hot August Nights, Sparks Hometowne Farmers Market and the Hometowne Christmas Parade. In addition to a well developed neighborhood city parks system and an excellent offering of city sponsored recreation programs, Sparks is less than an hour drive from world famous Lake Tahoe, with more than two dozen Alpine Ski areas and some of the best Nordic skiing in the country. City Government Organization Sparks is a charter city with a form of government patterned after the federal system. The Mayor acts as the executive branch and the City Council as the legislative branch, and the City Manager as the administrative branch. The City Manager appoints department heads and directs the operation of the city and its budget. The City Attorney and Municipal Judges are elected officials as are the Mayor and Council Members. The City has a total of 500 full-time employees, a total city budget of $78.9 million and a general fund budget of $35.9 million. |
