Population: 1,743 Located in Scotts Bluff County
Mitchell is a small community in Scotts Bluff County that was founded because of the railroad that was built along this route. Now, Mitchell has become a great place to live because of its proximity to Scottsbluff, and other towns in the region. The area is rich in prehistoric artifacts as well as rich in the American tradition of pioneer days, being on the routes of the Oregon and Mormon Trails and the Pony Express. The covered wagons of early-day explorers were awed at the sight of jutting bluffs and rugged hills rising above the flat Nebraska plains; the most famous one of all is Chimney Rock, a landmark used by those pioneers to find their way west. For those interested in the great outdoors, you can take your pick from the trails you want to take, from the Mormon Trail, the Oregon Trail, and the Pony Express. With four distinct seasons, Mitchell is not lacking in entertainment for people of all ages. Winter offers incredible beauty and peace that invites exhilarating activities such as skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing, or the cozy relaxation of enjoying a good book by a fireplace. Recreation opportunities are plentiful with great hunting, fishing, boating, ATV trails, camping and more. The water is great at nearby Lake Minatare for swimming, boating, or fishing. It is not hard to catch the limit of 2-4 pound walleyes at one of the State's best walleye lakes. An abundance of rainbow trout are found in many of the creeks and streams of the area. And to top it all off, this is one of the most affordable areas around! You can spend as little as $20,000 on a three bedroom, two bath home that averages around 1,400 square feet. There are many choices available to the discerning buyer and you can spend upwards of $500,000 if you so desire. Lots are also available and come in a variety of sizes and also with different views. Perhaps the best way to describe this community is "People helping People" and while the city has grown it is still well known for maintaining a warm and friendly atmosphere of a small town.
