Dakota City is in the extreme northeast corner of Nebraska with the Missouri River flowing on its east and north borders. South Dakota borders the north and Iowa on the east.

Originally made up of 10 cities, today, Dakota City is the only remaining original city in Dakota County. The county includes 2 cities (Dakota City and South Sioux City), 3 villages (Hubbard, Homer and Jackson), 1 unincorporated village (Willis) and one partial village (Emerson) that actually lie in 3 counties.

Dakota County is chock full of historical points of interest. The O'Conner house is a completely restored, spacious mansion built in the 19th century. The Tonwantonga is a historical marker designated to the Indians who lived in the area prior to 1850. These are just a few of the many landmarks that can be spotted throughout the landscape.

The county seat of this fine community is Dakota City. This is the site of the oldest church built in Nebraska, Emmanuel Lutheran Church. In 1964, this "Little White Church on the River" was dedicated as a national monument.

Dakota County has several state and county parks available to residents with a plentiful array of outdoor recreation. Camping, swimming, boating, fishing, hunting and more are all open to members of the community. Nestled in 800 acres of scenic woods is the Ponca State Park. Cabin renting, picnicking, and horseback riding are just some of the things to enjoy in spacious park that is truly one of Nebraska's most beautiful settings.

Nearly 60 city parks are available throughout the area. With winding trails, paddleboats, and playground equipment, this is the perfect setting for family entertainment or by yourself in peaceful tranquility.

For those who are sports and fitness minded, several golf courses are available, tennis courts and athletic clubs with spas and swimming pools are open to the public. Also community education and competition is provided in areas such as baseball, basketball, volleyball, and soccer. If a taste of culture is what you crave, Sioux City hosts a variety of culture activities including an art museum, a symphony orchestra, historical museums and theatre.

The Dakota County school system is a leader in the state of Nebraska holding accreditation with the prestigious North Central Association of Schools and the Nebraska Department of Education. The school district is currently working to achieve its America 2000 status.

Higher education is nearby providing opportunity for both full and part time students. Community colleges, technical schools, 4-year colleges and the University of South Dakota are in Dakota County.

The economic scene continues to grow as Nebraska has proven itself to be profitable for many manufacturing operations. The Dakota County area is home to 2 Fortune 500 Companies (IBP and Gateway 2000). Expansion continues in the area of plastics, agricultural equipment, insurance, medical equipment and food processing.

The major industry is agriculture and a major meat packing plant is located on the west end of the county. Although Dakota County continues to grow and change, the strong agricultural heritage has proven to be solid in times of need and adversity.
