In 1872 the Union Pacific Railroad was being pushed westward, opening a vast area for settlement. Mr. John J. Cozad, born in Vinton County, Ohio in 1830, became interested in a colonization project and decided to investigate the Union Pacific's settlement ideas. A trip from Ohio to Omaha, Neb., as far west as the railroad was finished, left Mr. Cozad at the 100th Meridian, a spot where the Platte River had widened to several miles. Mr. Cozad negotiated with the Union Pacific Railroad and purchased approximately 40,000 acres of land. He brought his first colony in 1873 at which time the town was incorporated and named Cozad in his honor.
