Bound by proximity, the "Twin-Cities" of Crystal City and Festus were founded more than a century ago. Crystal City was the original site of a glass factory that served as the city's main employer until its recent closing. The adjoining city, originally called "Tanglefoot" because of the condition of factory workers who frequented its bars in the 1800's, soon transformed into a city in its own right. When searching for a new name, city forefathers asked a lady resident to arbitrarily point to a name in the Bible - and - "Festus" was incorporated. Recently Festus has experienced a burst of development resulting in affordable housing, numerous new shopping centers, beautiful scenery and an easy commute to St. Louis.
