Poolesville was little more than a wilderness in the early 1700's when a few hardy souls ventured out and settled in this area. Little is left of that era, although the Poole House still stands, as does the one room school house that was built in the 1800's. Located on the western side of Maryland, almost at the border of Virginia, Poolesville is still a fairly rural area filled with dairy farms, cattle farms, crop farms, nurseries and horse farms. Several industries are located in the area and a careful balance is maintained between the agricultural and industrial aspects of the town. Natural beauty enhances the area, including the famous Sugarloaf Mountain. This national landmark with more than 3,000 acres of wooded parklands, is located eight miles north of Poolesville. It offers a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside as well as hiking and picnicking. White's Ferry, located six miles west of Poolesville, has the only ferry still operating on the Potomac River. The "General Jubal A. Early" carries cars and passengers between Maryland and Virginia.
