Marlborough, Connecticut
Population: 5,709 Located in Hartford County
Marlborough is a small town that retains a unique mixture of past and present. The surrounding hills, valleys, streams, the Blackledge River, and Lake Terramuggus fit well with the 1,990 homes and small businesses that call our town home. The Marlborough Country Barn is nationally known as the place to go for authentic Early American furniture of the very highest quality. Only a few steps away you can still enjoy fine colonial styled dining in an easy-going atmosphere at the New Sadler's Ordinary, a superb reproduction of an original inn that remains only in a broken foundation and folklore. For even more authentic colonial atmosphere, is the historic Marlborough Tavern which, except for new management, hasn't changed much since George Washington stopped by to eat, drink, and unwind after a tough day securing liberty. There is not enough space on these pages to list, much less describe, all the unique shops and attractions here; you will just have to come and see for yourself. Marlborough is not only a great place in the country to shop, dine, and take a break from it all, it is also the place to locate your business. Marlborough is home to Diversified Group Brokerage and Health Plan Services, major national participants in the self-administered health insurance field. SPM's headquarters is in Sweden, but we are home to its U.S. operations, which have been here for years, serving a growing market for sophisticated mechanical, failure-prevention diagnostic equipment. Their new subsidiary, MPS Plastics, joins Marlborough Plastics in providing injection molding to a growing list of customers. A.E. Aubin manufactures a popular and propriety line of part and component cleaning devices. Intelligent Motion Systems recently moved its operations to Marlborough to design and make small motor control assemblies. Is our popularity any surprise? We don't think so. We have three exits on Connecticut Route 2, a limited access divided highway linking Norwich, New London, Middletown, Willimantic and Hartford, none of which is more than 45 minutes away. While location is important, and we have been blessed with a great one, Marlborough's real strength lies in not where we are but in what we are. Town residents take a special interest in this town and volunteer to serve on boards and commissions to perform work that benefits everyone. Education is a high priority and 36% of our residents have at least a four-year college degree. Eighty percent of our high school graduates go on to study at institutions of higher learning.
