Glastonbury, Connecticut

Population: 31,876
Located in Hartford County

Like so many other affluent Hartford suburbs, Glastonbury was once an area of fertile and prosperous farmland. The farms and orchards remaining today provide a charming setting for the community's older colonial homes, new residences and attractive condominium complexes. Many residents work in neighboring East Hartford and in Hartford, just a short 11 mile commute away.

Originally part of Wethersfield (across the river), Glastonbury was incorporated in 1693. Its Museum on the Green houses the town's Historical Society, with exhibitions of Indian artifacts, silver, glass, period costumes, photographs, manuscripts and books. An ancient burial ground dating back to 1690 is next to the museum. Noted for its enormous kitchen fireplace and elaborate paneling and woodwork, the restored Welles-Shipman-Ward House is one of the local attractions.

Glastonbury is very proud of its quality of life and its schools. Many people move to this town because of the school system. There are five elementary, one middle, one junior high and one high school. Swimming pools, tennis courts, golf courses, supervised summer playgrounds and many sports programs are among its recreational resources.
