Welcome to Cromwell, the Crossroads of Connecticut! The Town comprises 13.5 square miles in the approximate geographical center of the state. It is 14 miles south of Hartford and 28 miles northeast of New Haven. The Connecticut River forms the eastern boundary of the town. A major north/south highway, Interstate 91, with two Cromwell exits, runs through the town. The Central Connecticut Expressway (Route 9), opened at the end of 1989, enhances the town's location as it connects I-95 in Old Saybrook, I-91 in Cromwell and I-84, the State's major east/west highway in New Britain. The town's position as a residential community is illustrated by the fact that approximately 68% of the fiscal 1993-1994 grand list were residential. The 5.2% unemployment rate compares favorably with the area's rate of 5.7% and the state's unemployment rate of 5.4%. The town's per capita income in 1989 was $20,518 as estimated by the Connecticut Department of Labor.

The town provides a full range of municipal services including public safety (police, animal control and civil defense), public works (roadways, building and grounds, solid waste management, engineering, motor pool and building inspections), health, sanitation, wetlands protection and zoning compliance, senior citizens, youth services, social services and welfare, recreation, library, education and schools and general government administrative service. The Cromwell Fire District provides fire, ambulance and water services.

Connecticut Transit (525-9181) operates two bus routes between Cromwell and Hartford. The "M" bus has 16 round trips daily between Middletown and Hartford along Main Street (Route 99). The trip is scheduled to take 33 minutes, with a one-way fare of $1.15. The "G" Cromwell-Middletown Commuter Express travels between Middletown and Hartford via Route 9, Berlin Road in Cromwell, and I-91. This bus makes six trips into Hartford in the morning from Cromwell and seven trips from Hartford to Cromwell in the evening. The scheduled trip is 25 minutes long and the one-way fare is $1.40. A commuter parking lot is located on the corner of Sebethe Drive and Berlin Road (Route 372) next to the I-91 southbound exit ramp. Cromwell is also served by a regional Dial-A-Ride service, operated by the Middlesex County Chapter of the American Red Cross, offering door-to-door service to the elderly and handicapped.

The Cromwell Recreation Department sponsors a variety of activities for the residents of town throughout the year. The winter calendar includes the following programs: basketball for ages 7 - adult (many different programs), children's art, toddler play group, school vacation programs, adult volleyball and adult aerobics. Cromwell's municipal government operates under a Town Charter. The legislative power of the town is vested in a combination of Town Meetings and the seven members Board of Selectmen, with a Board of Finance responsible for presenting fiscal operating budgets for Town Meeting approval.
