Redwood Valley, California

Population: 1,000
Located in Mendocino County

Redwood Valley covers about 35 square miles and the valley is most famous for its wineries and vineyards, which produce premium wines distributed around the world. There are over 900 acres of white wine grapes and over 1500 planted in the Valley.

Redwood Valley is only one hour north of Santa Rosa off of Highway 101 in the heart of Mendocino County. It's peaceful here. No highway gridlock, no heavy industry, very little that impacts the harmony of rolling forested hills dovetailed with beautiful vineyards.

Redwood Valley overlooks, overlooks Lake Mendocino, which is a breathtaking place to taste wines and have a picnic. There are also the famous Redwood Trees. You can visit those at Redwood National Park. Stepping into a grove of coastal redwoods has been likened to entering one of the world's great cathedrals. Sure, the sense of holiness is comparable but otherwise words and man-made construction have a way of coming up, well, short. No cathedral in the world vaults 30-plus stories high, as the redwoods do, and no amount of ornate carving or stained glass windows can outdo a redwood forest for the flamboyance of the rhododendrons, ferns, creeping oxalis, mosses, and other greenery decorating its floor.

Hikers at Redwood will find trails to match their schedules and interests. Bikers can choose between paved roadway and shore-hugging dirt roads. Paddlers can sample several world-class rivers that flow just outside the park. Wildlife lovers will marvel at the variety of birds and mammals on display.

If you feel like strolling into the town, Mendocino Village is probably your best bet. There you can select a stained glass plant that you'll never have to water again! Or find a cozy piece of driftwood for a pillow and take a nap on Big River Beach, preferably when the tide is out.

Perhaps you'd prefer to rent a kayak or to explore the sea caves at Van Damme State Park or, enjoy a cool, shady stroll through the Fern Canyon in the same state park.

Treat yourself to dinner at the famous Café Beaujolais or, better yet, get someone else to treat you, the food is well worth every penny spent at this luxurious little niche.

Housing is hard to find in this piece of Californian paradise - most of the time buyers are people interested in buying large tracts of land (500+ acres) to start their own wineries, or to have a ranch. If houses do come on the market, they are most often found in the villages near the coast, part of Mendocino County, and they start at $500.000

If a vineyard is in your future, or you want to move out of the commercialism of Los Angeles, then Redwood Valley and Mendocino County will be just the place for you, it certainly can't be beat for sheer breath-taking beauty!!
