Middletown, California
Population: 1,020
Located in Lake County
Middletown is the gateway to the county's resorts and is a vibrant country town of over 1,000 residents. Once a bustling stage stop on that route, the town now benefits from proximity to the Wine County and the Bay Area, with agricultural lands on one side and the world's largest geothermal fields on the other. Geothermal steam drives production of electricity at The Geysers atop the Mayacamas ridge west of Middletown (nicknamed "Steam City"); tours and exhibits are available at the new Calpine Geothermal Visitor Center. The same plentiful steam has long attracted travelers seeking renewed health or relaxation. Livestock ranches and vineyards surround Middletown; a 107 acre trailside park on Highway 175 west of town offers hiking, riding, and picnicking in a natural setting, with views of Mount St. Helena to the south. Off Butts Canyon Road east of town, Guenoc Winery showcases the restored historic home of the "Jersey Lily," Lillie Langtry, as well as wine produced from grapes she planted in the late 1800s. Three golf courses are nearby. The county's only 18-hole course is at Hidden Valley Lake. Adam Springs and Cobb Meadows, both near Cobb on Highway 175, are 9-hole courses. The town boasts a concentration of antique shops, and residents also find excellent dining, lodging, and shops, schools, churches, and businesses. Middletown is home to Twin Pine Casino, the county's newest casino. The Lake County Library operates a small branch library. The Middletown Times Star is published weekly. Residents enjoy the town's summer calendar of events including the popular Father's Day weekend event and Middletown Days, which includes a rodeo, gymkhana, barbecue, and music. Christmas in Middletown, in early December, is a time when the whole downtown hosts an open house, and the annual Christmas Renaissance Pageant and Feast is a local tradition.
