Kingsburg is a rural agricultural community in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley with a population of about 10,000. Kingsburg is regionally famous for its Swedish heritage. The architecture of the town captures the flavor of a Swedish Village and the traditions and values of the early Swedish settlers are passed on still today. The community hosts celebrations and festivals throughout the year which feature traditional Swedish dress, food, ceremonies, and entertainment. Kingsburg roots are with the Central Pacific Railroad beginning in 1875. In 1886 the first of a decade of Swedish migration began that has given the town special charm and integrity. By 1921 94% of the population was Swedish and by 1954 that had dropped to 30%. One of the unique aspects of the town is the high degree of child development in community activities. Community organizations and city services have worked together to create an environment which nurtures and protects children. Consequently, Kingsburg enjoys a reputation for being a quiet, safe community with excellent schools. Because Kingsburg lies in the center of the great San Joaquin Valley, it is within an hour and half drive to the scenic attractions of Huntington Lake, Shaver Lake, Yosemite Valley, and the giant redwood trees of the Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. The town is also only two and a half hours from the Pacific Ocean. Many recreation facilities are centered in Kingsburg. A membership golf club has a beautiful 18 hole golf course along the Kings River. Private river resorts nearby offer motel accommodations, camper hookups, boat launching, skiing and swimming. Located in the richest agricultural district in the world, Kingsburg has farming as its economic base. Principal crops are grapes, tree fruits, watermelon, and cotton. It is host to the largest dried fruit processing plant in the world, Sun-Maid Raisin Growers, and also to Del Monte Cannery which sends produce around the world.
