Albany is an urban small town, if there is such a thing. Immediately north of Berkeley (home of the University of California), Albany takes pride in its excellent school system and supports it well. Solano Avenue, which runs through the center of the city, boasts many restaurants and small shops; every fall the street is closed for a day for the Solano Stroll – a parade followed by general festivities. Albany also has its own police department, which “everybody knows” has not very much to do – very reassuring. It’s a friendly, busy, remarkably safe place to live, with a Mediterranean coast climate that can’t be beat!
