Surrounded by the Huachuca, Dragoon and Mule Mountains and bordered on the east by the San Pedro River (one of the premier bird-watching destinations in the country), Huachuca harkens to the frontier days of the Old West while still maintaining modern sensibilities. The city initially developed as a community outside US Army Post Fort Huachuca. Through the late 1800s and early 1900s, Fort Huachuca served as home base for soldiers and generals in many historic battles.

If you want to go shopping in the area, then you know the only place to go is the mall at Sierra Vista. This 400,000 square foot mall is anchored by Dillards and Sears stores. Major retailers such as Home Depot, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Target, and Marshall's are located in the community, along with three major supermarkets and dozens of smaller specialty shops.

The southeastern corner of Arizona, specifically the Sierra Vista area, is one of the foremost locations in Arizona for natural scenic beauty and viewing wildlife and bird life. The city is ringed with the mountain ranges of the Coronado National Forest. Hiking, biking, hang gliding and caving are just some of the active sports available to the visitor. Other activities are observatory stargazing, hot air ballooning and wave surfing.

Southeastern Arizona is an eco-crossroad. Habitats and species from the Sierra Madre of Mexico, the Rocky Mountains, and the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts can all be found in this area. The "sky islands" -referring to the abrupt rise of mountains from flatlands- shelter uncommon and diverse species of wildlife, plant life and bird life. The bird watching and wildlife viewing areas are world-renowned. Hundreds of species of birds fly to or through the Sierra Vista area during their seasonal migration. Unique wildlife, such as the coatimundi and javelina, make the grasslands and mountains their home.
