Fort Rucker, AL., the Home of Army Aviation. You'll enjoy the unique sights and sounds of Southeast Alabama. We take a lot of pride in the Army Aviation Center. It's an excellent place to live and work. We've received more than our fair share of TRADOC's Installation of Excellence awards. There's a lot of old- fashioned Southern hospitality on post as well as in the friendly neighboring communities. You and your family will be welcome. The post covers about 64,500 acres of southeast Alabama countryside in an area known as the Wiregrass, named for a wild grass peculiar to the region. With the consolidation of all Army Aviation flight training at Fort Rucker in 1973, the post became the mecca for Army aviators. Air Force helicopter pilots have also been trained here since 1971, as have students from more than 60 foreign countries. We teach everything from initial entry rotary-wing courses to advanced courses in aviation safety. Much of the main post is in Dale County, with the remaining government- owned and leased acreage in Coffee, Geneva, and Houston counties. Most of the countryside is rolling and wooded. An abundance of lakes and streams and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico make this area a fisherman's paradise. To carry out our mission, we support a daytime population of about 19,000, including about 8,000 people in uniform, 7,000 civilian and contract employees, and 3,800 military family members. Lake Tholocco is a 640-acre facility that offers a full range of recreation activities. Fort Rucker and the surrounding communities are encouraged to visit. You can take your pick from swimming, boating, camping, RV parking, volleyball, basketball, and hiking. Pavilion and beaches are available for all to use. Boating activities of all types is allowed year round. |
