Brewton is unique, offering residents the best of small-town living as well as one of the most advanced telecommunications infrastructures anywhere in the world.

Brewton and East Brewton are located in extreme south central Alabama, just north of the Florida Panhandle. The community is about an hour north of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico beaches, about an hour and a half from Mobile, Ala., one of the most historic cities in the South, and about two hours south of Montgomery, the state capital. Brewton and East Brewton are unique, offering residents the best of small-town living as well as one of the most advanced telecommunications infrastructures anywhere in the world.

Brewton, Ala., has twice been included in the book, "The 100 Best Small Towns in America," by Norman Crampton. Following are excerpts from the second edition of Crampton's book.

Once upon a time, Brewton was known as the richest little town in the South. Some local residents say it was the richest in the nation, though there are other contenders for that distinction. Brewton's high per capita income was created by a small number of "Lumber Barons," as they are remembered, who arrived at the end of the last century to cut pine and stayed to build extraordinary homes along Belleville and Evergreen avenues. They were generous people, and their descendants have carried on the tradition, funding many public improvements over the years -- most recently a $1 million YMCA completed in 1989 and the donation of a private, nine-hole golf course to public use.

Sharing the wealth has been good for business, too. Like many communities, Brewton tries to attract new manufacturers to town by putting up buildings on speculation -- simple, all-purpose structures, ready for occupancy by a new Brewton employer, who buys the building on favorable terms. But Brewton sweetens the deal -- some 60 community leaders dig into their own pockets to pay the interest costs for up to 10 years. That means the company only has to cover the principal, and, as one local businessman observes, "It shows a prospect that we put our money where our mouth is."

Another thing they're talking about in Brewton these days is the new Center of Excellence in Telecommunications on the campus of Jefferson Davis Community College, one of five special-purpose centers of excellence designated by the State of Alabama. The Brewton center will be used to test the latest in telecommunications technology in a rural setting.

The Brewton City School System manages three schools in Brewton -- Brewton Elementary School, Brewton Middle School and T.R. Miller High School. Brewton Elementary School serves students in grades K-4. Helping children feel good about going to school and enabling them to develop socially and academically are primary goals. A program designed to promote good behavior is Brewton Elementary And Me (BEAM). BEAM helps create a positive school climate as students, teachers and volunteers work together. The elementary school faculty is proud of its diverse curriculum and opportunities such as Writing to Read and Writing to Write programs, special education, Title I support services, full-time music, art, physical education and media. Active learning in an intellectually stimulating environment is encouraged.
