Brewton and East Brewton are located in extreme south central Alabama, just north of the Florida Panhandle. The community is about an hour north of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico beaches, about an hour and a half from Mobile, Ala., one of the most historic cities in the South, and about two hours south of Montgomery, the state capital. Brewton, Ala., has twice been included in the book, "The 100 Best Small Towns in America," by Norman Crampton. Following are excerpts from the second edition of Crampton's book. The Brewton City School System manages three schools in Brewton -- Brewton Elementary School, Brewton Middle School and T.R. Miller High School. Brewton Elementary School serves students in grades K-4. Helping children feel good about going to school and enabling them to develop socially and academically are primary goals. A program designed to promote good behavior is Brewton Elementary And Me (BEAM). BEAM helps create a positive school climate as students, teachers and volunteers work together. The elementary school faculty is proud of its diverse curriculum and opportunities such as Writing to Read and Writing to Write programs, special education, Title I support services, full-time music, art, physical education and media.
